Hello, fellow legionnaires of the Antichrist.

“Tech billionaire Peter Thiel recently warned that Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and critics of technology or artificial intelligence are “legionnaires of the Antichrist” in private lectures on Christianity that connected government oversight of Silicon Valley to an apocalyptic future, according to recordings reviewed by The Washington Post.”

Oh woe! How could anyone have the audacity to criticize Peter Thiel, the man behind Palantir Technologies, a mass surveillance corporation that’s working with the government with the express purpose of ending the concept of privacy…

…But really, what kind of reaction did he expect? Considering Thiel’s background, it’s hard to see his statements as anything but hypocrisy. I can’t think of anyone more worthy of the title of Antichrist: he’s exceptionally anti-Nature (and thus anti-freedom). For example: in a New York Times podcast, he said the following:

“We want more than cross-dressing or changing your sex organs. We want you to be able to change your heart, change your mind, and change your whole body.”[1]

Words like these signal a deep disdain for the natural — which explains everything. Peter Thiel, like all technophiles, loves technology precisely because he hates Nature (and by extension, reality).

But why does he go so far as to paint his opposition as the literal Antichrist?

Well, to state the obvious, technocrats like Thiel are zealots. They have a religious conviction that technological progress is not just good, but the ultimate good. Contrast this with our (Wilderness Front’s) worldview, in which wild Nature is the ultimate good. It’s really no surprise he hates our guts. Just listen:

“In the 17th, 18th century, the Antichrist would have been [...] a scientist who did all this sort of evil crazy science [...] In the 21st century, the Antichrist is a Luddite who wants to stop all science. It’s someone like Greta or Eliezer,” he said, referring to Thunberg and Eliezer Yudkowsky, a prominent critic of the tech industry’s approach to AI.”

Interestingly, the people he points to as “Luddites” are just the opposite. Greta Thunberg stands implicitly in favor of technological progress. (Green energy, like all industrial technology, extracts from wild Nature, thus destroying it. It may slow down the rate of destruction, but it does nothing to stop it.) And Yudkowsky is not only a supporter of AI but also a prominent AI researcher (!!). The most “Luddite” thing he has done is calling for mild regulations on artificial intelligence.

What Peter Thiel is doing by calling these lukewarm reformists as “Luddites” is shifting the overtone window. That is, he’s deliberately trying to make even light criticism of technological progress seem unacceptable. That way, real, revolutionary critiques of industrial technology are seen as outright ridiculous.

To make things clear, we at Wilderness Front do not criticize Peter Thiel (and other billionaire technocrats) because they have differing social opinions from us; we are neither left nor right. We criticize them because they are agents of technological progress, which — regardless of who’s in charge — is always in conflict with the interests of wild Nature.

No more half measures. Down with industrial technology. Up with wild Nature.
